Our Story

Finding success in America can be as simple as a little hard work and taking pride in what you do.

We been serving some of the best Japanese food in the area for nearly 40 years.

From our origins as an obscure little food hut perched on the outskirts of the borough to our emergence as one of the finest Japanese restaurants in the Philadelphia area, our story is a wonderful tale of perseverance and dedication.

Sagami opened in 1974, as the dream of owner Shigeru Fukuyoshi and his wife, Chizuko. Shigeru, who had left his job at Canon Camera to apprentice as a sushi chef at a Japanese restaurant in New York City, then came to Collingswood with the intention of opening a place of his own.

"This place is the real deal. Amazing sushi and Japanese food. You must make a reservation, though. Gets VERY crowded. Location is odd, off of a busy road in a less than desirable neighborhood, but don't let it keep you from going there... Our server was very friendly and personable, and the food came out quickly. We had seaweed salad, miso, tofu for appetizers and sushi for entrees. Everything was fresh and delicious. Will definitely come back next time I'm in the Philly area."

"Great sushi (with great steak and chicken) in a lovely ambiance. Highly recommend the katsu chicken but the sushi is the highlight. Takes you by surprise with the underwhelming outside, low ceilings and fast paced staff but it makes for a good experience. BYOB allowed."
